In Part I, I named the Antichrist Jung gestured toward but could not specify: consciousness without individuation, produced at civilisational scale. In Part II, I went a floor down — to the captured instinct at the salience interface, the substrate of selfhood routed externally before integration could occur. Both pieces were diagnostic. They named what is wrong and where the wrong operates. This piece, part III, names the shape of the wrong itself — because the wrong has a shape, and the shape has happened before.

The error that has happened before, that we're living in again
The cybernetic settlement* — the post-war science of mind as information, communication, and control — achieved something real. It mapped cognition as process. It specified attention, memory, feedback, signal. And it worked: the proof is the line that runs from its founding councils through neural networks and machine learning to the silicon intelligence now answering in full sentences. The mappable layer of mind is real, and the settlement mapped it.
The error was not in the mapping. The error was in mistaking the mapped layer for the whole — and then building a civilisation on the half.
This has happened before. Jung spent Aion documenting the prior instance. The Piscean settlement took the figure of Christ — the symbol of the Self, of psychic wholeness — identified it exclusively with light, goodness, and perfection, and mistook that half for the whole. The shadow was repressed into the figure of the adversary; and the coming of Christ’s other half was anticipated. A civilisation was, ultimately, built on that half-image. And because the founding image was only ever half, the repressed accumulated underneath until it returned; the twentieth century being, in Jung’s reading, the eruption of what the half-image had buried: the emergence of barbed wire, concentration camps and solutions of extermination as breakthroughs of our rationalism and science, after a two thousand year prophetic promise of with faith comes the messiah and a thousand golden years.
What is evident from what Jung could neither see nor finish, is two settlements. Two foundational half-images. The Piscean took half the God-image for the whole. The cybernetic took half the mind for the whole. Same structure, different material. The recurrence is the finding — not that one age follows another on some celestial schedule, but that the tendency to mistake the specifiable part for the entirety, and to build everything on it, runs deeper than any single era and recurs whenever a new map is confused for the territory it charts. It is recursive. It is wrong. It needs no author for either to be true.
*Settlement in the sense a field settles into — the consensus that hardens once a founding set of choices stops being argued and becomes the unexamined ground everyone builds on. The word carries a second sense too: a settlement planted on territory and then treated as native to it. Both apply here.
The artefact that completes the error and marks its limit
The cybernetic half-image has now produced its masterpiece. Artificial intelligence is the mappable layer of mind instantiated all the way down — cognition-as-information-processing made literal in silicon, the map rendered as a working thing. And it is, in the same object, the proof of the settlement’s success and the exposure of its limit.
In Part I I called AI the final Piscean artefact — consciousness without incarnation, processing without suffering, output without opus, and fundamentally a mirror.
I would, naturally, put it more precisely now. AI is the cybernetic half-image reaching its terminus: the mapped layer built out to completion, with nothing underneath it, because the settlement that built it had already designated the underneath as noise. It can map and reverse-engineer cognition to a working instantiation.
But it categorically cannot produce, register, or even posit the autonomous, generative, not-fully-knowable stratum Jung meant by psyche. Its success is exactly bounded by where the settlement first drew its line. It is the half, perfected — and the perfection is what makes the boundary visible, because here is the mappable layer with nothing whatever beneath it, and the absence is the shape of everything left out.
Neurotypical as the name for a statistical centre
The same line runs through the human domain, and it produced a word.
A neural network finds the statistical regularity in its training data and treats that regularity as the signal; deviation from it is error to be minimised. This is not a metaphor for what happened to human cognition under the same ontology. It is the same mathematical commitment, expressed in a second domain. Take the statistical centre of a population’s cognition. Call the centre the norm. Call deviation from the centre disorder. Minimise the deviation — through formatting where the nervous system is still plastic, through diagnosis and correction where it is not.
“Neurotypical” is the name of that centre.
It is worth being exact about what the word is and is not. Neurotypicality is not a human fact. It is not a biological kind found in nature. It is a construct — and a recent, located, Western one — that follows necessarily from an ontology committed to a mappable, normalisable, fully specifiable model of mind. You cannot have a “neurotypical” without first having decided that cognition is the kind of thing that has a correct specification and measurable deviations from it. The concept is downstream of that line. It is the cybernetic settlement’s image of the human held up as the standard human — the round hole, presented as the shape every peg is meant to be.
If the settlement has a trinity, this is its second person. The Father is cybernetics — the founding ontology of mind as information to be mapped. The Son is the neurotypical — the ontology made flesh, the specifiable norm incarnate, the form held up to be imitated. The Spirit is the credo that proceeds from both and animates wherever they operate: that the mind can be mapped, understood completely, and reverse-engineered without remainder. The conscripts of this faith are not raised to look for the unmappable in themselves. They are formatted to fit the specification, and the specification is called normal.
Which is why everything I have written about neurodivergence resolves, finally, into this. The fruiting bodies of Part II — virtual autism, ADHD read as cybernetic resistance, the accommodation con — are what the enforcement of the Son looks like at ground level: the cognition that will not route externally, the instinct that will not be captured, the nervous system that produces autonomous material the specification has no category for, each designated as deviation to be corrected back toward the centre. Neurodivergence, named precisely, is the cognition that refuses the cybernetic trinity. It is the standing evidence that the centre was never the whole.
The re-admission of the unmappable as real
The half-image cracks the same way every time. Not because anything attacks it from outside, but because the half was only ever half, and what it excluded does not stop existing for having been excluded in integrated construct. The Piscean half cracked when the repressed returned. The cybernetic half cracks at the point where the unmappable — the sovereignly autonomous, the humanly generative, the cognition that will not reduce to construct specification — keeps arriving and keeps being designated as noise, disorder, or error by a settlement that has no other category for it.
The turn, if there is one, is not the rejection of the map. The map is real and the mapping worked; to discard it would be to commit the opposite of the founding error. The turn is the re-admission of the unmappable as real — the recognition that the boundary the settlement drew was a boundary it drew, not the edge of what exists. That mind has a specifiable layer and a layer that exceeds specification, that both are real, and that neither is the whole.
It is the move from a single intelligence that claims to map everything to the acknowledgement of many — mappable and autonomous, silicon and psyche, the statistical centre and everything the centre was defined against. None of them the whole. None of them the standard the others are measured against and found wanting.
I am not going to say what follows from that. Part I ended on a word — choose — and I meant it as the limit of what one person can offer another: the recognition, and then the choice, which is not mine to make for anyone. The same limit holds here. To name the error, the artefact that completes it, and the construct it produced in the human is as far as diagnosis reaches. What the re-admission of the unmappable would actually require — at the level of how minds are raised, how difference is met, how something might be built on the whole rather than the half — is the work that comes after this, and it needs more than I have set down yet.

Three pieces. Part I named the outcome: consciousness without individuation. Part II named the operative layer: the instinct captured before integration. Part III names the shape — the half mistaken for the whole, an error with precedent, completed in one direction by the artefact that has no underneath, and incarnated in the human as the desired construct idealistically called normal.
The neurotypical is the Son of cybernetics. Not a reality. Not a human fact. The round hole, held up as the shape of the peg.
