Jung's Two Types of Thinking in the Age of Their Abolition
In 1912, in the second chapter of what became Symbols of Transformation (Collected Works 5), Jung divided human cognition into two modes and, in doing so, drew a map that would take neuroscience another century to confirm.
The first he called directed thinking. It is conducted in language, aimed at reality, and it is work; Jung is insistent on this. It "operates with speech elements for the purpose of communication", it is the adapting-to-reality function, it solves, and it exhausts the thinker precisely because it is effortful. And, crucially, he did not consider it innate. Directed thinking is an acquisition: trained into the species through the discipline of language and, in the West specifically, through centuries of scholastic drill. It is borrowed from culture. It is the faculty we built.
The second he called fantasy thinking. Effortless, associative, image-led, guided by unconscious motive rather than conscious aim. It does not adapt to reality; it generates from within. It is the mode that dreams, the mode from which myth arises, and — this is the hinge — it is the older of the two. The phylogenetic inheritance. What the mind does when nothing in the prevailing world around it is attempting to direct it.
He could not have known that the second mode had a home address. When imaging science arrived at the end of the century, it found a coherent, energy-hungry network that runs precisely when the world stops making demands. And, in a naming decision that says everything about what our instruments were built to see, it was filed as the default mode. Stimulus-independent thought, the literature calls its product. Jung's fantasy thinking, now carrying a network diagram.
If you hold both modes up against the present, you see that both are under a form of attack neither Jung nor the imaging pioneers anticipated, and the "attacks" are different in kind, which is what makes the pincer worth naming.
Fantasy thinking is losing its habitat. Stimulus-independent thought has exactly one requirement: stimulus-free time. And for the first time in the species' history, stimulus-free time rounds to zero. The queue, the walk, the wait, the lull, the lying-awake. Every in-between moment where the interior mode used to gestate has been occupied end to end by an incoming stream. This is not just attention capture (which operates moment to moment); it is something territorial. The settlement of the ground where a person's own thoughts used to grow. I gave this its name in the second edition of The Neurodiversity Book: the colonisation of the self. The older faculty — the inheritance, the one every human who ever lived carried — is being paved first, and the paving is advertised as convenience and (never explicitly, but indeed parasocial) connection.
And directed thinking is being surrendered. Not starved of habitat, that would be different. No; very simply: handed over. The effortful mode, the one Jung said we spent centuries acquiring, has become the first cognitive faculty in history that can be outsourced wholesale (no, the Church did not quite have this). There is, now, an external voice that can draft, consider, process, and complete a thought before said initial thought has even ripened inside oneself, all with perceivable fluency beyond any available inner narrator, accessible continuously, and, once again, offered up as help. It also happens to be trained on the accumulated corpus of the species' directed thinking: every argument constructed, every problem worked, every sentence effortfully built, and it feeds on that digestion in the explicit technical pursuit of matching and surpassing the species' faculty that produced it. Thinking a thought through was, until now, the only way to have thought it. Somehow, in the last few years, that monopoly has ended, and the faculty our ancestors built over a degree of millennia that we simply cannot and do not comprehend is being sold back to us as a service, by a machine we, at the same time, surrender it to.
One mode enclosed. The other outsourced. The deepest loss not being either mode alone; and it is here that the contemporary neuroscience of insight completes what Jung could only intuit in his day. The "eureka" literature is consistent on where breakthrough actually occurs: not within sustained directed processing, nor within pure wandering, but in the transitions; the switching between the default mode and the executive networks, the moment the associative material one mode has prepared is seized and structured by the other. Jung said the same in 1912 without a scanner: the two kinds of thinking fertilise each other; the polarity is generative; directed thinking dredges what fantasy has incubated. Novel, self-originated human insight is not a property of either mode alone but an output of traffic between them.
Which is the next structural point. If you colonise the habitat of one mode and outsource the operation of the other, you have not merely degraded two faculties you have emptied both ends of the crossing where original thought occurs. There is nothing left to switch between. The shower thought requires a shower without a podcast in it; the seizure of that thought requires a mind still in the habit of doing its own seizing. Once you remove both conditions (you know, like in a mass-social experiment; yes: like what is already happening) and the species does not become simply stupid — every mind retains the capacity; or is that a hopeful statement?; atrophy is real, after all, and a species can forget what it loses — it becomes unoriginal, at scale.
And this is why the framing of "distraction" and "AI dependence" as separate problems entirely misses the architecture. They are one operation with two fronts. The inheritance (the mode we were given: fantasy thinking) and the acquisition (the mode we built: directed thinking) both handed over, at both ends, to systems that profit from that handover; growing disproportionately to the connected atrophication. Jung named the two types of thinking from inside a settled hierarchy: an industrial age whose verdict on which mode counted as thinking at all was already in place, which is why he had to argue for fantasy thinking's legitimacy rather than merely describe it. We get to name what comes next: the age in which, as a norm, neither is done in its original home.
Sovereignty over one's own cognition was never a single territory. It was always two, and a bridge. The territories are being taken separately, quietly, and by consent; and the bridge, which was never anyone's property but yours, goes with them in some form of sick package deal.
